Testing your soil and adding the needed amendments are key to good harvests and beautiful blooms next Spring.  Here are some tips from our October Checklist for your lawn and garden to help; you with that process.

Maybe even more than every other month, gardening in October is entirely dependent upon the weather. There are plenty of things that can be completed this month to get your lawn and garden ready for winter – and for next spring, so let’s get started!

  •     Get your soil tested and add amendments as needed.  For more information on amendments, stop by our Garden Center.  Our staff will be glad to answer all your questions.

  •     Amend your soil with a dressing of compost
  •     Turn your existing compost pile.

  •     Use your garden debris and leaves to start a new compost pile.  According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, “Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 30 percent of what we throw away, and could be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.”
